Australia is the only country on our planet that occupies a whole continent, though the smallest one. Its total area is more than 7,6 million square kilometers and it is 30 times bigger than the area of Great Britain. Despite that, the population of Australia is not a large one - about 23 million people which is almost three times smaller than the population of the UK.

The climate of Australia cannot be described as a pleasant one: it"s hot and wet in the South, generally mild in the centre and hot and extremely dry in the North. The climate differences are mainly formed by the long mountain range that stretches across almost the whole continent and divides the hot dry lands of the mainland from the juicy lands close to the coasts. However, Australia is one of the oldest lands of our planet and no wonder that the landscape is mainly flat. But it is not boring at all - incredible colours of Australian deserts, salt lakes and strange rocks are really fascinating.

Australia is a part of the British Commonwealth and . The nation"s capital is Canberra - a beautiful green city with numerous parks and squares. The modern history of the continent dates back to 1770 when Terra Australis Incognita was discovered by Captain James Cook. The first British settlements appeared there in 1788. But the old history of the Native Australians is much older - the archeologists discovered paintings on the rocks that are about 40 thousand years old. The unique culture and traditions of their ancectors are carefully kept by the Aboriginals till nowadays.

The country is a wonderful tourist destination. Millions of people visit the upside down world every year to experience the extraordinary nature of the continent which is really worth seeing. Thousands of unbelieveable unique species of flora and fauna can be met only in Australia. Kangaroos and koalas, platypuses and kookaburras can be seen in the wild.

Australia is an island continent in the southern hemisphere.
It is washed by the Indian Ocean in the west and the Pacific
Ocean in the east. The territory is not very big with the
population more than eighteen million people.
The climate of the country is very hot. The biggest part of
Australia lies in the tropical belt. It rains heavily in summer,
but it"s very hot, too.
Northeast coast of the country is protected by the Great Barrier
Reef, and in the east there is the Great Dividing Range with
Mount Kosciusko, the highest mountain of Australia.
The deepest river in Australia is the Murray River and the
Darling is the longest one. In desert regions there are salt
lakes like Lake Eyre. The inner part of Australia is occupied by
deserts. The most famous ones are Desert Victoria and Gibson"s
Desert. In the west semi-deserts turn into savannahs.
The plant life of Australia varies. There are desert grasses,
scrub, eucalyptus, acacias and others. Australian animals are
unique, they can not be found in any other place of the Earth.
For example, kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian devils, echidnas,
platypuses, dingos and others.
Australia is a member of the Commonwealth. It is a federation of
6 states and 2 territories. A governor heads each state.

well.
Australia is a very interesting country with rich culture and

On the right coast of the continent are located the metropolitan cities, where the larger part of population lives. The rest of the huge island is occupied by desert plains and mountains, where the minerals are concentrated.
Such cute animals of Australia, like jumpy kangaroo or “exotic grey teddy bear” the koala, are well-known symbols of the state, but except, travelling along the green part of the continent the tourist can also face to other unusual representatives of fauna. The vegetable world of the island is no less amazing. On the territory of Australia grow wonderful plants like eucalyptus and acacia. Totally, about 85% of flora and fauna are endemic that means they are native to the certain location and exist only in Australia.
While everyone wants to see Australia, I would prefer to live there. And my dream is based not only on the stereotypes about rich life in the highly developed country, but on the statistic data about the level of happiness of people living there.
The Australians are deprived of ambitions and refused of the desire for being the best and the first like American people. The life of average Ozzy (as they are calling themselves) is joy and pleasure. What can be better than to live in the country of everlasting summer, among the amazing creations of nature and human, and to take great enjoyment in the beauties of the country of contrasts?

The first man who reached the Australian coasts was Willem Jansz, a Dutch seaman. He landed on the northern coast of the continent in 1606.
The northern and western coasts were investigated by the Dutch in the 17th century. The sailors named the continent New Holland.
In 1770 James Cook, a British navigator, reached the coasts of Australia. He was the first to investigate Australia and named a lot of its mountains and bays.
The beginning of the British colonization of Australia was connected with the loss of the thirteen American colonies during the War of Independence. The British government lost the right to send criminals from England to North America. The loss was compensated by seizing new territories. The first group of criminals arrived in Australia in 1787 and founded a settlement named Sydney. And only in 1793 the first group of settlers who were not convicts came to Australia.
The 50s of the 19th century were the turning point in the history of Australia. The deposits of gold were found then, and it led the country to the rapid economic development. Till that time Australia had held the first place at the world wool market. Since that time the industry started to develop in the country.
The discovery of gold also led to a large wave of immigrants to the country. In 1900 the British colonies got the rights of states. In 1901 they united in a single state. That was the beginning of the modern Australia.
